DIY : ideas and tips by Subrata Mallik

DIY can be fun and can save money but may become a very expensive affair as well. I take the risk as I enjoy it. I do not want formal training, not that I cannot afford it. I like to find out myself. There is enough information on the internet.

26.2.23 Leaking joint under small kitchen sink. Pushed the tapered slip washer up the downpipe like this \____/ , then tightened the nut over to the p-trap.

(There are two washers common to PVC plumbing. A flanged washer often sits where the PVC pipe connects to the sink drain basin of a kitchen sink and the tapered slip washer that seals the connections between the down tube coming from the sink and the connections of the P-trap.)

Clean drain filter Bosch dish washer

Remove bottom tray. Unscrew and remove filter. Separate 3 parts. Soak in liquid soap water for 15 mins. Clean with a brush. Dry with tissue paper. Replace. If the spray arm is obstructing, then put outer tube in place first, then the flat piece followed by the 3rd piece. Turn to align the arrows.

Install a new basin mixer tap after removing the old

One day I noticed that the bathroom basin mixer tap has become wobbly.

I thought I will try to remove the old one and install a new mixer tap myself.

Bought a mixer tap from Amazon along with basin mixer tap backnut wrench. I already had some other basic tools.

Watched a few videos online. Did not look too difficult. Took notes on what to do. I can always call a plumber if necessary.

Turned off water supply at the isolation valves. Removed old tap with flexi tails.

Had some difficulty in fitting the isolation valve adaptor.

How to clean Bosch washing machine drain

At the bottom right corner is the slot. Turn off power. Drain water via the tube provided, into a bowl. Then turn the knob anticlockwise and remove lid. If stuck, you can tryy turning it with the two hands of a plier. Bring the drain out, clean it after removing forign bodies like buttons, clips etc. Replace and close the lid by turning clockwise.

Water dispenser for garden hand wash

Buy water butt spare tap from Wilko £3.  Heat a metal pipe of same width as tap and press it on the lower part of the bucket. Clean with nail polish remover. Apply PTFE tape on tap thread. Fit the tap. Apply silicone sealant around the tap. Use after a few hours.

Water damage on kitchen ceiling

Better to leave this job to experts. I took the risk.

6.11.20 Water damage on kitchen celilng. I thought it was a leak from bath tub. Could not see any. Later, found out that the leak was from toilet next to bathroom.

Flush pipe connector was leaking. I repaired after some struggle:

Remove flush pipe - top end first. Replace silicone connector using a little fairy liquid. End of pipe should protrude a little. Insert connector a little into back of toilet pan first. Then connect the cistern end loosely. Placed a small piece of wood behind the pipe. Pushed the toilet backwards and pushed the connector in place. Tightened the top end with hand. No silicone needed. On 18.6.21 put some plumber's putty between ridges of the pan end, and tooth paste around top end as it was leaking again!

29.6.21. Repaired broken front low boundary wall. Wilko external filler powder will work on masonry, wood etc. Use like a paint - grey colour. For small cracks.

Wilko patching plaster is very sticky, grey - for large filling on brick wall.

12.7.21. Dead car battery although only 5m old! Halfords lithium jump starter did not work this time. It took 8h to charge instead of 2h. Returned and received £60 money. Bought Noco GB20 booster lithium battery £79. Cleaned battery terminals. Still not working. On 3rd day searched internet - 'Parasitic electrical drain' - found that passenger light inside was on. Turned it off. Tried jump starter again, did not work. Tried on manual override - worked at last! Lesson - turn off all elctrical swiches before locking car.
